ANNOUNCEMENT: NIHR funding agreed for Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) for Greater Manchester

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has announced funding for the creation of an Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) for Greater Manchester, alongside 14 other similar ARCs across England.

The new ARC will start on 1st October 2019, as the  CLAHRC Greater Manchester contract finishes at the end of September.

This announcement is a result of a collaboration bid to NIHR, through Health Innovation Manchester (HInM).  As a result, the new ARC will formally become part of HInM (hosted by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust).

We’re delighted that the NIHR has agreed funding to continue the important and impactful work that we have been working on together with our partners across Greater Manchester.

It’s also excellent to see how the ARC’s work aligns with the evolving local priorities of the Greater Manchester health and social care community. This has always been a part of how we at CLAHRC GM have worked; so we’re very pleased to see this continue.

The Chair of the CLAHRC GM board Chris Brookes has welcomed the news, paying tribute to the fantastic work that we, as a team, have done in the past six years:

“It has been a true privilege to chair the CLAHRC GM board. In collaboration with our many trusted partners, we have generated knowledge that has helped to transform services, and the lives of the people they serve; whilst developing the research skills and capacity of many people and partner organisations.

CLAHRC GM has a legacy that will live on many years into the future; and of which, everyone who has worked as part of the team (for a long time or a short time) can be incredibly proud .”

The themes being taken forward by the ARC will be:

  1. Healthy aging

  2. Digital health

  3. Mental health

  4. Organising care

  5. Evaluation

  6. Implementation science

  7. Economic sustainability

So whilst some of our programmes will finish with the end of the CLAHRC; some will continue into the ARC. We’re proud to have established a legacy around the principles of collaboration to generate knowledge, improve services, improve lives, and develop people.

And beyond these principles, our legacy for Greater Manchester’s health research community is one of tangible benefits.

These include the many resources that we have developed to share knowledge and improve practice; the many relationships we have fostered across Greater Manchester and the wider world; and the many developments and improvements in research capacity we have helped to foster in our NHSand third sector partners.

All of these resources are freely available via our Resources section, and in the Our Work section on each Programme page. We will be adding more resources and knowledge between now and September.

An ARC programme board has now been established in order to ensure a smooth transition from the CLAHRC to the ARC. This is chaired by Amanda Risino, Managing Director/Deputy Chief Executive of HInM, with Ruth Boaden leading on behalf of the CLAHRC and Nicky Cullum on behalf of the ARC.

We’re proud of the impact CLAHRC GM has had, and look forward to the new opportunities that the ARC will offer for the people of Greater Manchester.
