NIHR CLAHRC Greater Manchester – Contributing to a Safer Salford through Primary Care Workforce Evaluation

NHS Salford Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has appointed NIHR CLAHRC Greater Manchester to carry out an evaluation of the implementation and early impact of a number of new roles within its Primary Care workforce.

Across the UK, NHS Primary Care services are being asked to meet ever increasing and changing demands in more efficient, appropriate and sustainable ways. As part of Salford CCG’s ‘Primary Care (General Practice) Workforce Strategy’, which aims to address those issues across the City, CLAHRC GM’s evaluation study will focus on new roles specific to general practice.  Whilst there are others planned, the first roles to be implemented are Advanced Practitioner, Physician Associate, and Clinical Pharmacist.

With participants ranging from frontline health workers to senior CCG members, working closely with Salford CCG, CLAHRC GM is using observations, in-depth interviews and analysis of relevant documents to understand the challenge and impact of embedding such these new roles into Primary Care. By conducting the evaluation study in this way, it is hoped that it will provide valuable insight that can then be shared with key staff, healthcare partners and stakeholders to inform future service development.

Preliminary findings from the study are expected later this year. For further information, please visit our projects page
