Knowledge Mobilisation Programme

ARC Yorkshire & Humber

The NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Yorkshire and Humber Knowledge Mobilisation programme focuses on building capacity and capability and mobilising evidence across these priority areas:

  • Early Life and Prevention
  • Urgent and Emergency care
  • Mental health
  • Older people

At NIHR ARC Yorkshire and Humber (YHARC), we’re transforming how research evidence reaches those who need it most. We’ve developed a unique approach that brings together our knowledge mobilisation, communications, and implementation science teams. These three teams have joined to form our Implementation and Mobilisation in Practice (IMPACT) team.

The IMPACT team includes three knowledge mobilisation fellows embedded in our local Integrated Care Boards in West, South and Humber/North Yorkshire. Our implementation science team, part of the Improvement Academy, forms the implementation arm of YH ARC and works hand-in-hand with our knowledge mobilisation efforts. Whether supporting healthcare professionals planning for implementation or helping researchers study and evaluate implementation, this integrated model ensures research doesn’t just generate evidence—it creates and evaluates change.

Approaches

The main approaches the knowledge mobilisation team take are:

  • Capacity Building: Support at individual, organisational, and system levels through fellowships, regional/national training, and practical examples
  • Community Engagement: Build relationships, map needs, establish communities of practice, and provide rapid feedback to drive implementation.
  • System Leader Engagement: Embed fellows in ICSs and co-produce knowledge mobilisation strategies with leaders.
  • Researcher Engagement: Provide knowledge mobilisation training, logic model development, and "learn by doing" support for impactful research.
  • Tools and Dissemination: Create and share toolkits, reports, and briefs; co-produce research to ensure relevance.
  • Communities of Practice: Facilitate shared learning and tailored training for adoption and adaptation.
  • Implementation Frameworks: Use structured strategies like Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research and share successful examples.
  • Training and Support: Train fellows and researchers to move from passive to active knowledge mobilisation roles, using "train the trainer" models for scale-up.

We would also like to acknowledge our Knowledge Mobilisation Champions who lead knowledge mobilisation in each of our research themes
