Economics in the NIHR
Economics has become firmly embedded within NIHR’s activities. It is one of the methodologies supported by the NIHR’s capacity-building activities and economists are now expected to be involved in most infrastructure, programme and project funding.
The NIHR has core areas of focus, including economic modelling, cost-effectiveness analysis, resource allocation and priority setting, and health technology assessment. Creating a network for health economists will allow its members to:
- share best practice around NIHR economics areas of focus
- provide details of ongoing and completed work
- develop new collaborations.
NIHR Economics Group launch
The NIHR Economics Group was launched at an event in Manchester in October 2025 - information about the launch and the Group's aims are available in the launch brochure.
It featured parallel sessions covering each of the Group's 11 sub-groups. The day also included a plenary by Chris Mullin, Director of Analysis and Chief Economist at the Department of Health and Social Care, as well as a panel session hosted by NIHR Programme Directors.
