Find out more about the NIHR Economics Group

Economics in the NIHR

Economics has become firmly embedded within NIHR’s activities. It is one of the methodologies supported by the NIHR’s capacity-building activities and economists are now expected to be involved in most infrastructure, programme and project funding.

The NIHR has core areas of focus, including economic modelling, cost-effectiveness analysis, resource allocation and priority setting, and health technology assessment. Creating a network for health economists will allow its members to:

  • share best practice around NIHR economics areas of focus
  • provide details of ongoing and completed work
  • develop new collaborations.

NIHR Economics Group launch

The NIHR Economics Group was launched at an event in Manchester in October 2025.

It featured parallel sessions covering each of the Group's 11 sub-groups. The day also included a plenary by Chris Mullin, Director of Analysis and Chief Economist at the Department of Health and Social Care, as well as a panel session hosted by NIHR Programme Directors.
