NEW FREE EVENT - 18TH MARCH: In person event focussing on addressing health inequalities and local needs through research about health and social care

A workshop that aims to explore health inequalities across Greater Manchester and uncover the potential for research to make a difference is set to take place on Friday 18 March at Gorton Monastery, Manchester - register here

Through discussion, researchers will join public and patient involvement and engagement representatives and people working in the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) Sector to identify how best to work together to address health inequalities. An outcome of these discussions will be to create an agenda for action relevant to research about health and care, and inequalities accross patient safety in the context of health and care services.

Two National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Manchester-based research centres are working together to host the event, ourselves, the Applied Research Collaboration Greater Manchester (ARC-GM) and the Greater Manchester Patient Safety Translational Research Centre (GM PSTRC).

Professor Caroline Sanders (University of Manchester) who works across both ARC-GM and the GM PSTRC, with a particular focus on patient experience and marginalised groups, said:

“We are delighted to be hosting a workshop where public contributors, researchers and representatives from the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise sector can equally contribute to identify how we can work together to address health inequalities and meet the needs of our local communities through our health and care research. Ensuring marginalised groups are involved and that diversity is addressed is an important focus of the day.”

The workshop will further strengthen the partnerships ARC-GM and the GM PSTRC have built with marginalised groups and VCSE communities. A key aim of the day will be to extend those valuable relationships by creating an agenda that’ll be driven by a desire to improve services and patient safety for those most in need across Greater Manchester, and beyond.

Charles Kwaku Odoi from the Caribbean & African Health Network, said:

“Putting the voices of marginalised communities and those with lived experience at the heart of research and policy formulation is the right approach as we collaborate to reduce health inequalities.”

Current, relevant research underway by ourselves at ARC-GM and the GM PSTRC will be presented by researchers. This includes studies focussing on inequalities during COVID-19, mental health and homelessness. There will also be an opportunity to hear about the work underway within the VCSE sector from key organisations who will highlight the need across Greater Manchester and will identify potential areas for research.

We are keen to encourage anyone who has an interest in improving patient safety across local communities to attend.
