Manchester Digital Pain Manikin research programme - Digital Health Inequity

Chronic pain affects many people but why it happens and the best treatments for it can be unclear. Digital pain manikins, also called pain drawings or pain body maps, may help with the reporting of pain. The Manchester Digital Pain Manikin (MDPM) has been designed for people to use on their own smartphone.

This project builds on previous work to explore how the MDPM can be used to support patient-professional communication and help make better decisions for pain management, by:

  • identifying groups of people who are at risk of inequity,
  • looking at the impacts of using the MDPM for those groups, and
  • identify and prioritising ways to manage any potential negative equity impacts of the MDPM.

This is being done in collaboration with pain management services, and community-based organisations to reach groups who are currently underrepresented in (digital) pain research.
