Research priorities in mental health

What did we do?

We undertook a research priority setting exercise to help us reach a consensus between key stakeholders on the top priorities for physical health and serious mental illness (SMI). By setting the agenda in this way, we hope to inform researchers and NHS healthcare professionals about what future work might be most beneficial to the people affected by these issues.

Why was it important?

It’s well recognised that people with SMI suffer from significantly worse physical health than other people in the population. Researchers have started to turn their attention to this important issue, yet much more work needs to be done to help us to understand how to improve physical healthcare for people with SMI.

How did we do it?

In April 2015 we ran a workshop with around 30 stakeholders who had an active interest in physical health and SMI. Those involved included service users, carers, researchers and a range of healthcare professionals involved in the provision of mental health care from Greater Manchester West NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust and Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust. Through group discussion, with reference to priorities submitted online before the workshop, 26 priorities were identified. Using voting technologies, which allowed delegates to view live scoring results, the 10 key priorities in physical health and SMI were identified. Group discussions and consensus voting exercises then narrowed down the top three priorities.
