PhD study: The implementation of a pledge scheme to promote behaviour change in people who are overweight or obese

What are the aims of the study?

  1. Understand the problems overweight or obese people face when trying to lose weight
  2. Design a pledge to increase people’s commitment to their weight loss goals. It’s hoped that this will increase weight loss for people who attend weight loss groups in Greater Manchester.

Why is it important?

Being overweight or obese increases the chances of having other conditions, like diabetes, heart disease and some types of cancers. Not only do conditions related to being overweight or obese have big impacts on people’s lives, but they also currently cost the government approximately £6 billion a year, and this is expected to rise to £10-12 billion by 2030. The increased costs and risks associated with being obese or overweight makes weight loss a major public health issue.
