Groundbreaking mental health theatre production now available to view online

Side Affect, the hour-long show that premiered at THINKphysical: Manchester Mental Health Festival, explores what it’s like to live on antipsychotics.

Jane has had a psychotic episode. No problem – except she no longer feels the passion that made her a singing sensation. She needs to find a way to cope with the seismic effects of her medication, but who is really in control of her illness, and her life?

Written and performed by Mad ‘Ed Theatre, and funded by the NIHR CLAHRC Greater Manchester as part of THINKphysical, Side Affect takes you on an acute exploration of what it is like to live on antipsychotics in a fun, stimulating and participatory way. A service user and carer group was critical in the creation of the specially commissioned theatre production, which was extremely well received: all four showings sold out. The play is now available to view below via our YouTube channel.

Compared to the general population, people with serious mental illness have much poorer physical health, a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and a significantly reduced life expectancy. As the first festival to focus on both mental and physical health, THINKphysical put these issues in the spotlight.
