Prof John Øvretveit shares his evaluation expertise with CLAHRC Greater Manchester
Professor John Øvretveit, one of the world’s leading experts in health service, implementation and quality research, today (7 May 2014) presented a workshop on project evaluation, designed specifically for CLAHRC Greater Manchester staff.
The interactive workshop took place at Manchester Business School and was designed to enable CLAHRC GM staff to:
- Learn more about how to plan, implement and report complex evaluations
- Hear about each others’ work
- Network with colleagues across the different CLAHRC GM themes
- Get feedback on the design of ongoing CLAHRC GM evaluations from Professor Øvretveit and other workshop participants.
Four CLAHRC GM projects were selected for a 15 minute presentation at the workshop. These were drawn from different CLAHRC GM themes, aiming to represent the diversity in evaluation approaches across projects. Each presentation was followed with a group discussion, bringing together project-specific expert feedback and explored cross-cutting issues relating to the evaluation of CLAHRC GM projects.
The event concluded with a lecture from Professor Øvretveit titled ‘Evaluating quality improvements and implementation’ and an open Q&A session. Professor Øvretveit kindly agreed for his lecture, open Q&A and a private Q&A to be filmed. Please check the CLAHRC GM website over the coming weeks to access these. Professor Øvretveit currently leads EU research projects on integrated care and implementing chronic care practice. He is also carrying out research on adapting Swedish national clinical database systems to the USA context, involving patients’ use of register data for their own self-care. His previous reviews of evidence of costs and savings of quality improvement, coordinated care interventions and patient-centred care interventions have been used by health systems to improve quality and reduce costs. He was awarded the 2014 Avedis Donabedian international quality award for his work on quality economics. Translations of some of his over 300 peer-reviewed scientific papers and books have been made into nine languages. Six books have won publications awards, including twice winner of the European Health Management Association Award and the Baxter Health Publication of the Year prize for “Action Evaluation” (2002) and “Health Service Quality” (1992).
