Why were you interested in research and this ARC-GM Internship?
I am considering undergoing a professional doctorate in future and would like to gain more experience with health and social care research, and determine if it is something I could see myself making a career out of in future.
What are you hoping to achieve over the course of the Internship?
I want to gain an insight into how research happens in the real world, including how funding is obtained, the process of ethical approval, data collection and analysis, and how this is disseminated. I also want to figure out how I can make research a part of my role as a therapist to improve services and interventions.

Why were you interested in research and this ARC-GM Internship?
I am undertaking an ARC-GM Internship because I would like to identify whether I wish to become involved in research and whether it is possible to mix my clinical role with research. I also want to know more about the skill set for research and methodologies/methods involved.
More specifically i'd like to explore qualitative outcome measures in clinical settings and the commissioning of specialist learning disability health services using more inclusive (and focused) approaches led by learning disabled people, which move away from an impairment focused or medical model to a social focus e.g. social determinants of health/ public health approach. What are you hoping to achieve over the course of the Internship?
I hope to get closer to developing a research question which will translate into tangible differences in the lives of learning disabled people and also understand more about my next steps in my career.

Organisation:
Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust
Job title:
Paediatric Metabolic Dietitian
Why were you interested in research and this ARC-GM Internship?
Working at one of the largest paediatric metabolic centres in the UK, I provide dietetic support to patients with the rarest inherited metabolic disorders, yet understandably, the evidence-base underpinning their dietetic treatments is limited. I want to help change this.
Undertaking this internship is allowing me to dedicate specific time to improve my research skills, including my ability to systematically review and critically appraise current available literature. It is providing me with the opportunity to complete a Masters of Research module in critical appraisal and evidence synthesis and learn from experts in research methodology. This will help me to identify and justify the key areas where further research is vital in order to improve our dietetic practice.
My future goal is to pursue a Pre-doctoral Fellowship and a PhD, moving towards a clinical academic career. I want to use research to help inform dietetic practice in inherited metabolic disorders, to improve efficiency, quality, and safety of dietetic patient care. What are you hoping to achieve over the course of the Internship?
I want to improve my knowledge, understanding and skills within clinical research. Specifically, by the end of the internship I would like to be equipped with all the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to conduct a systematic review, design my own research project within inherited metabolic disorders and apply for a Pre-doctoral Fellowship.

I am hoping to increase my understanding of research methods through attending planned workshops with ARC-GM as well as applying for a research methods masters module.
I would like to increase my understanding of PPI and how to ensure that future research is relevant for the people that it is there to support.
Having an individual supervisor will be helpful to reflect on my learning needs and to consider my goals.
I am hoping that by the end of the internship I will have a clearer idea of my options for combining research activity with clinical practice moving forward.
