Longitudinal study of leadership

What are the objectives of the study?

Research into the ‘pilot’ Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRCs) between 2008 and 2013 showed the important role of senior leaders in determining the structure, priorities and overall direction of the collaborations. This study focuses on the NIHR CLAHRC Greater Manchester senior leadership team (SLT), exploring the processes that underpin the development of strategy in a large-scale collaborative research partnership over time.

It aims to address the following questions:

  • How does the strategy of a collaborative research partnership develop over time?
  • How do the members of a leadership team influence and interpret this process?

What does the study involve?

  • Four interviews (45-90 minutes each) and two focus groups (90 minutes each) with the SLT members each year from 2014-2017;

  • Observation of the bi-monthly SLT meetings;

  • Interviews with other members of staff as appropriate to explore the impact of emergent strategies.

What is the duration of the study?

The interviews, focus groups and observation are  taking place over a four-year period, from July 2014 to May 2018.

What difference will the study make?

The study uses the unique opportunity offered by the NIHR CLAHRC Greater Manchester to examine cross-disciplinary collaboration in real-time, and the management and leadership of large-scale and complex research programmes. It is supporting the NIHR CLAHRC Greater Manchester to achieve its knowledge mobilisation objectives by involving the SLT in critical discussions of their theories of ‘what works, for whom and in what circumstances’ and by enabling the formulation of a collectively agreed, actionable knowledge mobilisation strategy.
