PhD Study: Do general practice incentive schemes across Greater Manchester improve quality and reduce inequalities?

This research is led by Matt Conroy as part of his PhD Fellowship.

What are we trying to do?

We want to find out whether local quality incentive schemes in primary care are an effective, efficient, and fair way to improve the quality of healthcare.

Why is this important?

To improve the quality of healthcare, something called 'pay-for-performance' schemes (where healthcare professionals are paid to meet certain performance targets) have become widespread internationally. In recent years, many commissioning bodies in England have developed their own local incentive schemes.

Because these schemes exist alongside the national scheme (called the Quality and Outcomes Framework, or QOF), it's important to understand if these local schemes are improving the efficiency, effectiveness and fairness of healthcare.

How are we doing it?

A systematic review is a type of research that looks at all the existing studies on a specific question or topic and pulls them together in a structured, organised way. This project involves a systematic review of local incentive schemes and various analyses of incentive schemes in Greater Manchester using a variety of methods.
