Salford Complex Glomerulonephritis Service

What are we trying to do?
We are doing a service evaluation of the Salford Complex Glomerulonephritis Service.

Salford is the only site in the UK that has a dedicated generalised glomerulonephritis (GN) clinic. In this study, we will aim to show the benefits to patients and the NHS of having more complex GN services in the UK.

Why is this important?
Glomerulonephritis (GN) is a group of diseases that injure the part of the kidney that filters blood called the glomeruli.

Although there are 54 sites with some kind of GN service across the UK, each centre tends to concentrate on one area, for example, transplant or chronic kidney disease (CKD). So, after seeing a patient, nephrologists will discuss the patient’s case with specialist clinicians to help make decisions on their treatment and care.

The challenge with the rare diseases C3 glomerulopathy (C3G), IgA nephropathy (IgA) and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), is that they are difficult to manage, with only a few nephrologists nationally that can do this without additional support. There are also very few consultants who know which pathways or networks to use for support.

How are we doing it?
In this service evaluation, we will:

  • Map the Salford Royal complex Glomerulonephritis (GN) service so we know exactly what it can and cannot do.
  • Prove the value of a complex GN service through the development of a ‘value proposition’ that explains the benefits to patients and to the NHS.
  • Share the findings nationally with other Renal Services to address inequalities that currently exist for patients with a GN diagnosis.
